2017

Happy New Year!

My blog feed is full of 2016 reflections and 2017 resolutions, goals and #makenine plans. I'm really loving reading these, but I just haven't felt like writing one myself (although I do appear to be doing just that, right now). I dunno. I've been feeling a bit ambivalent towards sewing lately. Life in December was mega busy. Work is OK, but very busy and quite stressful and December itself just brings lots with it. Honestly, nearly every evening, P was asking me what that evening's jobs were, and there were always several. That didn't stop me from finishing my brother's cushions, or from making a party skirt (yet to be blogged), but if I'm honest, they felt more like a chore than fun.

These past couple of weeks (Christmas aside) I've just felt exhausted, irritable and lacking in any energy, creative or otherwise. No patterns or blog posts are inspiring me, I have had no interest in fabric sales - just as well, as I am well and truly skint. It goes without saying that no sewing has been done.

I should say, before this all gets too depressing, that I am fine, and that we did have a very lovely Christmas and New Year. I spent time with friends who live at the other ends of the country, I had quite a few nights out, I introduced the boys to Mary Poppins, the kids performed Christmas songs for us, we built lego, scooted on new scooters, listened to endless Roald Dahl audiobooks and decorated a dazzle ship and joined in family ceilidh at the National Museum of Scotland's "Sprogmanay".

So, there will be no resolutions for me, not right now anyway. My plans, such as they are, are to sew things that make me happy and that I will wear, and to reduce my fabric stash (either by sewing it, or getting rid of it). I'm not setting objectives or goals, but I will continue to track my spending, because that was insightful and worthwhile. I would like to work through some of my queue, because some of those ideas still stand, and I'd like to do more block printing and stencilling where possible.

That's me. What about you?

  1. I'm sorry December worked out as it did for you, that sucks. Mine was similar, I've been feeling pretty meh about crafting in general and a bit antisocial and grumpy since the holidays have ended. How do you track your spending? That sounds super useful! My 2017 goal is to pay off my credit card so any tips would be gratefully received!

  2. I like your idea of not setting goals. I hope to just find time to sew in 2017, work and family leave me with very little freetime at the moment. My main goal is to get a better job which does not call for weekend or night working. Then I hope other things will fall into place x

  3. I think that how you've been feeling is part of the ebb and flow of life. My experience is that creativity comes and goes, often in line with how many other demands there are on my time and energy. Also while Christmas is lovely, December is always busy, more so when children are young. I haven't made any resolutions this year, sewing related or otherwise (apart from maybe clear out the garage!). I know I will be doing more exams in 2017, and that combined with work is quite enough for me. I would love to do more sewing but it just can't be a priority at the moment. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy 2017 x

  4. Sorry to hear you're feeling so exhausted, and uninspired to sew. I think I'm going to use the Sewmystyle & Makenine S inspiration but not get too hung up about it as I want my sewing to be enjoyable and these challenges can get to be just anothe stress if you worry too much about keeping up! I'd like to get my winter coat finished this year. Cut it out end of 2015 I think! I hope you feel more energised soon. Xx

  5. Hi Helen, I hear ya! Really, New Year is a rather arbitrary date and it is just as likely to not be inspiring as to be inspiring. I do think that taking a breather from time to time is a good idea. Noone wants their favourite things to become a chore xo

  6. Glad Christmas and New Years was fun. I am the same with sewing at the moment. Other than a few chore bits I've not sewn since before Christmas. Life is just to fraught and my brain too frazzled. I too hope to carve out some time for fun sewing.

  7. That all sounds downright sensible and very familiar! As Philippa (above) says, creativity comes in fits and starts. Roll on the spring.

  8. I have always thought January is the wrong time of year to set goals. Too soon after Christmas, too dark, too much to get back into the swing of. Hunker down, take it easy x

  9. I can relate, I didn't do resolutions or plans this year either, can't actually be bothered! Glad you had a good Christmas, must look at the family ceilidh for this year, sounds fun!

  10. Glad the holidays were good and there's nothing wrong with saying no to resolutions! I have no doubt you'll make 2017 a great year!
